Ride the Willapa

June 20-21, 2020
Willapa Hills Trail

Back for its fourth year, Ride the Willapa is an all-ages and all-levels bike ride in the Chehalis River Valley of southwest Washington state. Providing a beautiful break from city life, Ride the Willapa brings people of all ages and abilities to the verdant Chehalis River Valley for a leisurely-paced bike ride on the Willapa Hills Trail, Washington state’s newest rails-to-trails project.
This year’s route begins at the eastern terminus of the Willapa Hills Trail in historic Chehalis and ends six miles into Pacific County, in the Pluvius Hills. Enjoy up to 62 miles, a metric century, of pure countryside glory!

Experience the ride at your own pace and leisure! Choose however many miles you want to ride. With checkpoints every five miles between Chehalis and Rainbow Falls State Park, there are plenty of opportunities to stretch, relax, chat for a bit and just enjoy the beauty of the trail’s surroundings. Most families with young kids opt to do the 15 miles to Rainbow Falls, camp out overnight and return the next day. More experienced cyclists will want to go further and explore more of the trail, and checkpoints will also be placed further along as well. It’s really all about how much you want to do!
The Tour de Farms is also back this year, giving you an opportunity to not just enjoy the beauty of the trail and adjacent scenery, but also to meet our local farmers, visit the baby animals and buy some delicious food!

Make a weekend of this excursion and enjoy overnight camping. Drop your gear off at the start point, ride all day and head to your campsite — we’ll haul your stuff while you enjoy the excursion! Or finish in one day and enjoy some of the arts scene, food and more in the Chehalis and Centralia area. And we welcome self-contained bikepackers this year — 24 spots are available for those wanting to haul their own gear, tour the countryside, and camp overnight at the 31-mile mark.

You’ll want a bike with 700x28c or wider tires…basically anything with thicker tires than a road bike will do alright. To do the entire metric century, we recommend mountain bikes — hardtails are okay, but you’ll have an easier go of it with a suspension.

Our 2018 event was our biggest yet, and it brought people from across the Pacific Northwest to see and explore the beauty of the Willapa Hills Trail, which once served as a lumber and passenger railroad in the 19th and 20th centuries!
Camping options are as follows:
Rainbow Falls Campout: Rainbow Falls State Park will be our flagship campout spot for the third year running! Located 15 miles from Chehalis just off the Willapa Hills Trail, there’s room for 250 campers with tents as part of our event permit. Amenities include river access, playground, restrooms, showers (with tokens available for purchase), a Group Camp area, and much more.
Willapa Hills Farm Campout: We’re happy to announce that we are partnering with Willapa Hills Farm in Doty, just three miles from Pe Ell, to host a campout with space for 200 people. This is in response to high demand for overnight camping during last year’s event! Enjoy camping under the stars on this working farm that is also home to Willapa Hills Cheese. Amenities include river access, the Tour de Farms Market, family activities and more!
PLEASE NOTE: Meal tickets for each campouts are a separate purchase and are not included in the main ticket price. Dinner and breakfast at both campouts are available for purchase with the Meal Ticket options; you will need to purchase a meal ticket for each camper. Meal tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth, and cover both Saturday evening’s dinner and Sunday morning’s breakfast.

If you are interested in participating in this event you can register online.
